The Office of Tourism was established in August of 2010. The program is funded by a 2% transient occupancy tax (bed tax) authorized by legislation passed in 2009 by the Virginia General Assembly. The legislation stipulates that revenue generated by this tax must be spent in support of tourism activities 1% of the revenue generated by the transient occupancy tax must be spent for tourism and travel, marketing of tourism or initiatives that attract travelers to the locality and generate tourism revenues within the locality.

1% of the revenue generated by the transient occupancy tax shall be spent for the design, operation, construction, improvement, acquisition and debt service for tourism facilities, historic sites, beautification projects, promotion of the arts, regional tourism marketing efforts, capital costs related to travel and transportation including air service, public parks and recreation and information centers that attract travelers to the locality and generate tourism revenues in the locality. (In 2004 Bath County adopted a 2% percent occupancy tax which goes directly to the General Fund for county operations).

The tourism sector employs almost 65% of Bath County's workforce and generates $225.7 million in revenue and is the primary industry for Bath County.
